According to the latest labour force statistics for July - September 2014 released today by the Census and Statistics Department, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 3.3% in July - September 2014, same as that in June - August 2014. The underemployment rate increased from 1.4% in June - August 2014 to 1.5% in July - September 2014.

Comparing July - September 2014 with June - August 2014, an increase in the unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) was observed in the decoration, repair and maintenance for buildings sector while decreases were seen in the cleaning and similar activities, and warehousing and support activities for transportation sectors. As to the underemployment rate, increases were observed in the transportation, and food and beverage service activities sectors.

Total employment decreased by around 4 300 from 3 790 000 in June - August 2014 to 3 785 700 in July - September 2014. Over the same period, the labour force also decreased by around 7 800 from 3 926 400 to 3 918 600.

The number of unemployed persons (not seasonally adjusted) decreased by around 3 500 from 136 400 in June - August 2014 to 132 900 in July - September 2014. Meanwhile, the number of underemployed persons increased by around 2 400 from 54 600 to 57 000.
