HSI Down 311 pts Midday; Stanchart Slumps 7% on Results

At midday close, Hang Seng Index and China Enterprises Index were last traded at 19103 and 8006, down 311 pts and down 163 pts, respectively, on turnover of $35.119 billion. 

Blue chips posted loss broadly. Banks softened as HSBC HOLDINGS (00005.HK)  -0.450 (-0.916%)    Short selling $229.03M; Ratio 34.358%   lost 1.4% to $48.45; HANG SENG BANK (00011.HK)  +0.200 (+0.153%)    Short selling $48.27M; Ratio 48.072%   edged down 0.6%; BANK OF E ASIA (00023.HK)  -0.700 (-2.794%)    Short selling $13.05M; Ratio 39.318%   tumbled 4.6%; BOC HONG KONG (02388.HK)  -0.350 (-1.728%)    Short selling $11.98M; Ratio 16.656%   gave up 2.1%. 

STANCHART (02888.HK)  -3.000 (-6.283%)    Short selling $120.14M; Ratio 38.014%   posted US$1.5 billion loss before tax last year, marking the first yearly loss since 1989. The stock price dived 7% to $44.4 at midday. 

AIA (01299.HK)  -0.950 (-2.369%)    Short selling $149.90M; Ratio 24.069%   , to reveal the results tomorrow, dropped 3.7% to $38.6. CHINA MOBILE (00941.HK)  -0.600 (-0.708%)    Short selling $56.44M; Ratio 20.919%   and TENCENT (00700.HK)  -1.500 (-1.057%)    Short selling $180.06M; Ratio 18.175%   fell 0.8% and 1.7%, respectively. TINGYI (00322.HK)  -0.520 (-6.500%)    Short selling $27.69M; Ratio 36.787%   , issuing profit warning yesterday, slid 5.5%, becoming the worst performer of blue chips; ESPRIT HOLDINGS (00330.HK)  -0.410 (-4.946%)    Short selling $3.86M; Ratio 12.306%   , posting a loss of $240 million in mid-term, drifted lower by 3.5%.
