STANCHART 1Q16 Pre-tax Operating Profit US$539M, Down 63.9% YoY STANCHART (02888.HK)    -0.950 (-1.574%)       Short selling $28.19M; Ratio 10.008%      announced that for the quarter ending 31 March 2016, the statutory profit before taxation was US$589 million, down 59.21% yearly. Underlying profit before taxation was US$539 million, down 63.9% yearly. Operating income fell 24.34% yearly to US$3.345 billion. Operating profit before impairment losses and taxation fell 42.89% to US$1.096 billion. Total operating expenses dived 10.11% to US$2.249 billion, reflecting restructuring actions taken towards the end of 2015 and business disposals. The bank plans to deliver the planned $1 billion in gross cost efficiencies in 2016. BOC HONG KONG 1Q Operating Profit before Impairment Allowances at $6.643B BOC HONG KONG (02388.HK)    +0.350 (+1.446%)       Short selling $30.30M; Ratio 18.599%      announced that net operating income before impairment allowances of the group’s decreased by 4.1% year-on-year to $9.49 billion for the first quarter of 2016. Operating profit before impairment allowances was $6.643 billion, down 8.1% yearly.  Net interest income dropped due to the narrowing of net interest margin but was partially offset by the growth in average interest-earning assets. The decline in net interest margin was mainly due to the decrease in average interest spread, caused by the drop in onshore RMB market interest rates and the decrease in higher-yielding RMB balances and placements with banks, as well as the increase in short-term debt securities investments. HSI Drops 122 pts; AIA Continues Higher As dragged by Mainland bourses, Hang Seng Index retreated 146 pts at most to the trough of 21,320 after opening down 58 pts. The benchmark index lost 122 pts or 0.6% to finish the morning session at 21,344. Hang Seng China Enterprises Index faded 110 pts or 1.2% to 9,010. Market turnover amounted to $30.902 billion. SHCI Closes Up 0.22% Shanghai and Shenzhen markets fluctuated after opening down today (22 April). Buoyed by financials, the markets attempted to peak for several times. Yet without support, they eventually maintained volatility within narrow range. At market close, Shanghai Composite Index added 0.22% to 2,959.24; Shenzhen Component Index gained 0.92% to 10,151.76. CSI 300 Index closed up 0.45% to 3,174.9; ChiNext Index's performance was the outstanding, growing 1.27% to 2,136.92. Turnover of Shanghai and Shenzhen markets amounted to less than RMB430 billion.

HSI Closes Down 155 pts Hong Kong stocks headed south today (22 April). European Central Bank (ECB)'s president Mario Draghi said current policies take time to show effects. Market was concerned that the central bank may not have new measures in near term. Hang Seng Index followed external markets to open down 174 pts this morning and once dived 263 pts to hit the trough of 21,358. The benchmark index saw a narrowed decline after morning's close, sinking 155 pts or 0.7% to end at 21,467. Hang Seng China Enterprises Index closed down 127 pts or 1.4% to 9,120.
